I am incredibly dissatisfied with the filters I recently purchased. I even paid for one day shipping. The filters repeatedly failed the red dye test. I tightened the (cheaply made) wing nuts, and still the filters failed the red dye test. So, I watched as it filtered, and the red water was coming directly out of the filter element, not from around the wingnut. I am going to order another set from a different seller and will update my review when it arrives.The wing nuts have always been poorly made and I do wish Berkey made better wing nuts for their filters.

I'm so tired of buying these and they only last for 3 months before they stop filtering and the water just stagnates. I've done all kinds of things to try to remedy the problem but it just seems to be the nature of these gravity filters.

The filters clogged up after 6 months. We live off grid and are running our rainwater through this for our drinking water. We replaced the porcelain filters which lasted a very long time with these are disappointed that they don’t seem to be lasting very long. Cleaning the filters didn’t help either.

Tough enough for Asia.Water treatment (at the source plant) is improving in much of Asia but you can't be certain that contaminants wont get into the reticulation system before your tap.I have been using a Berkey now for some time and am very happy with it. To be sure, I have read some of the concerns and I've concluded that in area, where water could be truly contaminated from time to time, you need to build some redundancy in.First I put the drinking water through a standard 10 inch 1 micro sediment filter. These are cheap and readily available in hardware stores. If out of 1 micron then 5 micron will suffice. Second, I fill my Berkey from a sealed plastic container. I fill that from the 10in filter and put a few drops of plain bleach in it and let stand for at least an hour before filling the Berkey from it. This is enough on its own , btw, to make your water safe, but it will taste bad from the chlorine. It also solves the problems of adding contaminants yourself as you are handling water to your Berkley. Third I do the red dye test on the Berkey ever 6 months or so to make sure nothing has broken down in the Berkley - the red dye wont get through if the Berkley filter / seals are working wellMy logic is that the Berkey, when working properly , is actually good enough to deliver safe water, even here. However with these simple and very inexpensive backup measures my most precious resource is now as close to failsafe as possible.Sounds stupid, but the only water I enjoy drinking now is out of a Berkey - at room temperature.

Love my Berkey! Living in an area where our water routinely measures high levels of arsenic, among other lovely added bits, my Berkey is a livesaver! Replacing the purification elements every 5 years is not a problem. I bought a travel-size Berkey for my RV and added white to the black filters since I sometimes end up in very far-away places :)

These aren’t from berkey, the box I got had the barcode crossed out with black marker. The filtered water has a bad smell from the beginning and hasn’t gone away with repeated usage. Many other reviews say the same things. Could be someone else’s old filter or a complete fake.

I bought same filters last time so i decided to buy again. This time one didn't filter any water, the other was filtering really really fast. Water tasted horrible so I will try filters from other sellers and see if I get lucky. I wish their filters are consistanly made and realizable :/

All is good. Seems a bit pricey for 2 filters but I don't know how many nickels it takes to manufacture these things....but I want my drinking water filtered, so be it....a bit concerned over the "glue failure" I have read on other posts but I have not had that experience yet. I did take off a thin outside layer of the old filters with a knife, cleaned them up and reinstalled them to see what would happen....water runs through like they were new..need to do the food color test to see if they are still functioning properly...in the mean time the 2 new filters I bought are still in the $107.00 box....

These filters don’t work. They are disintegrating & leaving pieces of black filter in the bottom of our Berkey. We’ve never had this problem before. Our water gushes through instead of dripping & being filtered. I see that another customer added a video of our exact same problem. This is a defective product.

When you want to have good drinking water, get a Berkey and replace with only Berkey parts. They are expensive but I trust the brand.

Major problem with the industrial rubber washers that come with these filter elements and the original Big Berkey. As I was putting them on, I noticed my fingers were getting black from the rubber washers. So, I washed them gently with gentle soap and dried them before installing the filter elements. But, a day later after I started using my Big Berkey, I started getting a smell and taste of industrial rubber (like warm car tires) in my water and I could not drink this water anymore. I am chemically sensitive but, no one who isn't should be ingesting this stuff either. These washers need to be food grade material and clearly they are not. Without this being resolved, almost 300$ is going to waste for me as I am not able to use my Big Berkey filter. If anyone has a solution, please let me know. I would appreciate it.

Arrived with cross-threaded or stripped thumb screw. I had another one so was able to make it work. However, after a couple of refills, the flow from one of the filters was not normal. Instead of flowing straight down as normally happens in the other Berkey filters, the stream would move from side to side and sputter. Although most of the time the flow was normal, I assumed it was something inside that was loose and moving around. So I returned it without any problem and will order another Black berkey set of two from another source.

Not sure what's going on, but this time around, the filters began to fail after 4 weeks. We have a well with lots of silt coming through the tap and I noticed the bottom tank of our Big Berkey was black with silt. It should filter all that out. Not sure what to do now! Maybe buy directly from Berkey!?

Great water purification filters and they remove smell, bad taste and a whole lot more. Where I live we have HARD water and it stinks right out of the tap. Some cities are going toilet to tap and I will not allow my family to drink this water no matter how they say it has been treated. Having the Berkey treat the water give me peace of mind drinking it. This Berkey is the only way to go.

We’re a family of five using our Berkey for all cooking & drinking water. Two filters last a year on average. Compared to bottle water or home delivery water services, you can’t beat the price of these at $.35/day for clean filtered water.

Horrible !!! I’m wonder if it’s a pice of wood painted black ! No water filtered from it ! I spent almost 30 min for each filter and no bobbles come out ... did t react like my previous ones ... I try to put on the container for few hours and no water come out from it !

Berkey makes a great product. I've been using my Berkey water filtration system for 3 years and the water taste so good. Don't know how I messed up my original filters but they stopped working and after much experimentation finally gave up and bought some new ones. The thing is that I fill the water container up almost daily so I can't say that I didn't get my money's worth on the originals
