This item is flimsy and poorly put together. Additionally it did not put an edge on any of my knives where a cheaper steel product had no problem doing so.The ceramic rod came loose of its wooden base only a week after purchasing. It only took one more week dor it to fall out all together. It appeared to be glued in with superglue very cheap and terribly manufactured. The rod itself is pencil thin and appears to be made of a strange coarse ceramic much different than the smooth ones I'm accustomed to seeing on other ceramic honing rods.I highly recommend a Victorinox brand or another esteemed knife brand when choosing a honing rod and don't be cheap, you get what you pay for.

I use this in conjunction with my regular steel to keep my knives touched up. This tool is meant to sharpen the edge, the steel is to straighten it. I like the ease of use as opposed to using a flat stone, and it stores easily with my knife block. It does not seem to be to aggressive, but then I use it lightly. the other advantage to using this is that it sets a slicing type edge to your knife, removing the myriad tiny ridges that a steel leaves on your knife edge- which are better for going through tougher items. With this, my knives cut much better and it is handy and easy to use, but be sure to watch a professional video on how to use these types of items-- there is none that comes with it

Bought this as a add on.. was not sure how much I would be using a ceramic "Steel". However, once I took it out of the protective packaging and used it on my first Kitchen Knife I was sold. It is now the final Hone of all my knifes.As a precaution... retain and store this in the packaging that it is sent in. Prior reviews alerted me to just how vulnerable this sharpening stick could be to ruff handlingAlso... a good recommendation is flatten out one side of the tang and handle... does not need to excessive. Just so that you can set in down on a work surface and it does not roll away... and tragically off the table to the floor ... where it will shatter and break

I bought one of these about a month ago. To be totally honest, I wasn't expecting much, but for about ten bucks I figured that I didn't have much to use.After using it on any number of blades, however, I must say that this thing puts an edge on a knife like nobody's business! If your hands can keep a steady angle for half a dozen strokes, you will have a knife with a razor edge. I'd say the rod is equivalent to about a 500 or 600 grit stone, so it won't polish an edge, but it will get most knives sharp enough for just about any kitchen task. I have a cheap Chinese folder that I bought on impulse because I thought it looked cool, but it came out of the package dull. Four strokes this morning on each side has it slicing paper into shreds.Highly recommended.

I don't understand all the negative comments. I agree with the review that finds this inexpensive and useful.I don't use this as my only sharpening tool; I have a Chef's Choice 1520 that I use about once a month to restore my knives to super sharp. However, I find a honing stick useful on a daily basis to give the knife a quick once over before using it. You can see the difference by checking tiny nicks in the blade. It is practically impossible to get rid of these using a honing tool, but the sharpener can eliminate them.The small size of this tool makes it ideal for my use as it fits conveniently into a drawer, or a knife block on the counter. A larger tool would not fit so easily.

When I purchased my Global knife, I was very happy with its performance but noticed that, after a couple of years, it had lost some of its keen edge. I was looking into the idea of shipping it off to sharpen it when I decided to do some research on the issue. A few Youtube videos later, I realized that I didn't need to sharpen it by sending it off and grinding it down. I needed to "realign" the edge. I decided on a ceramic sharp stick as I wasn't sure what the hardness of my Global was and figured the ceramic would be fairly all-purpose. Once it arrived, I promptly began honing my knife with a few passes. I thought it would be hard to get the angle, but it really does follow the shape of your knife's edge. I immediately noticed a huge difference. It really is amazing. At the slightest hint of dullness, I pass my knife over the sharp stick and it's instantly transformed into scalpel-like precision. I am very, very happy with my purchase.

This tool puts a perfect edge on my hunting knives when it is convenient, by that I mean that the designers have accepted zero blame when it comes to the crap that should be designed into a handle. Why, a round handle? Why would a design engineer, design anything that would/could roll off the table when your hands are wet with blood or any other hunting fluid?

This product comes in a well protected cylinder marked made in USA. I thought that the length of 8 inches (exclude handle) is a bit too short but it seems to do the job well. The surface is very smooth and is indicated as medium grade. Not too sure if it is solid ceramic or just ceramic wrapped around steel. Anyway, when I place it near a magnetic knife holder it does not attract at all. It may mean that the ceramic coat is very thick. I tried it on a few grades of knives, German and Japanese steel and find that a burr can be seen after 3 to 4 strokes. I feel that this rod does perform honing or sharpening very well, the tricky part is how the user angle the knife during the process to ensure a optimum sharp edge.Overall I would recommend this product over the steel stick as I find it perform better.
